This New York Times article raises a great question: Should NBC be airing their two hit comedies in the eight o’clock hour? I haven’t watched the new “30 Rock” yet (thank you DVR!) but I can definitely say that “The Office” definitely pushes the envelope as far as what is considered family entertainment. “The Office” is on later so it can be defensed a bit more than the 8 pm airtime of “30 Rock”. From what I understand, the bit on “30 Rock” now involves a reality show called MILF Island. The acronym alone is too dirty for that time slot.
I’m not a huge prude or anything. This is coming from a guy who thinks “The 40 Year Old Virgin” should have won Best Picture (not really, I just love it a whole bunch). It’s just that our standards have been so desensitized that most people don’t blink when something like MILF is said on a TV show. I assume that the show is made fun of for being trash on “30 Rock” and that lessens the effect a bit but it’s still pretty vulgar. I mean, does everybody remember when “The Cosby Show” was the big 8 pm EST show on NBC?

I’ve never watched 30 Rock, but I don’t recall The Office being particularly offensive. But maybe I just don’t remember?

They both push some boundaries, but in essence they’re no worse than past NBC shows. The old “family hour” doesn’t exist anymore with cable and the amount of choice available to viewers 24 hours a day. It’s not like they’re showing nudity and claiming to be a G-rated after school special. Hell, the Simpsons are on at 8pm and they push the envelope all the time!
