Episode 4.1: “The Beginning Of The End”
Airdate: January 31st, 2008.
Focus On: Hurley
The season opener of “Lost” sure did not disappoint. The fourth season hit the ground running and started right up from where we left off in season three. There are so many plot lines and questions, it is really hard to decide where to begin. I won’t bore you with my synopsis of the show, instead just a few thoughts.
The title of the episode is definitely correct. I had a feeling of finality throughout. The new flash-forwards really give you an idea of closure, even if it seems like it could be quite some time from now. Apparently, the Oceanic 6 rumors are right and that is going to be an important part of this season. We found out today that Hurley will be joining Jack and Kate back in the real world. Regardless, there is no doubt that the writers know where they are taking us and we can put the “making it up as they go along” theory to bed…for good.
What exactly could Hurley tell the world about? It really seems like Jack has done something awful before they got off the island. I am sure that Kate knows all about it as well, which could be why she was so hesitant to see him. Hurley is probably the first of the six to realize that, like we heard Jack say, they need to go back to the island.
It’s strange but I feel that the things happening in the future are more interesting than what is happening on the island. Now, I’m not saying the Jack and Locke battle isn’t interesting because it is. I am pretty sure that people who have been onboard with “Lost” from day one knew that this day would eventually come. There is now a definitive split of Locke believers and Jack followers. It seems like Locke is right about the new arrivals to the island. I am not so sure about that either. Hurley, while shooting hoops with Jack, said he shouldn’t have gone with Locke. Man…it doesn’t seem like any decision is going to be the right one.
Did Hurley imagine seeing Charlie? Who are the people that Charlie said Hurley needed to help? Who was the man pretending to be an Oceanic lawyer? Who was that man talking about when he asked Hurley “are they still alive”? Who was in Jacob’s cabin? Why did Jacob’s cabin seem to move around?
These are all questions that I am sure we will get answers to…in 2009 or so. I don’t care. I am just glad that “Lost” is up and running again. It sure beats Howie Mandell. Does he still put that glove on his head?
