Will Eddie Murphy Please Go Away Now?

Episode 4.4: “Eggtown”

Aaron?!?! I am completely floored. Kate left the Island and took Aaron with her. The amount of questions this unearths is almost scary to think about. I honestly had chills and felt sick when Kate said “Hi Aaron”…and I will probably feel that way until next week.

There were quite a few things going on in this episode but I’ll start with who I proclaimed “The Most Interesting Character On TV”, Ben Linus. The confrontation of Ben and Miles had me on the edge of my seat. All I wanted was to hear something, anything, about Ben. Apparently, our Ben has much more going on than anyone ever thought, if that is even possible. The line from Miles, “Don’t act like I’m one of them!”, was extremely telling. Miles knows that Ben is a powerful man and must have at least 3.2 million bucks in the bank. I understand he made it all in T-bills.

We also got to see Ben push Locke’s buttons. Ben sure has John Locke’s number doesn’t he?

When we go back to the beach, we find out that the helicopter boys haven’t been heard from and the iSatellite iPhone thingie just isn’t working quite right. Hmm…that sure sounds suspicious to me. Also, Dan the Man is obviously having some memory issues. Why is that? I thought that people got super powers and whatnot while on the Island?

Sigh. All these questions and I haven’t even gotten to the meat of the episode.

We also learn that the Freighter peeps are well aware of Kate and her fugitive status. Miles is now the second person to tell Kate that she should stay put. Was Kate planning on staying until Locke told her to hit the bricks? Did Kate decide to bail when Sawyer spilled his guts about not wanting to have a child with her? Is she in love with Jack and thinks that could actually work out? Umm…we know it sure doesn’t.

Ahh Jack. I guess now would be a good time to go into Kate’s flash-forward. We all knew she was one of the Oceanic 6 so seeing her in a courtroom once she got back home was kind of expected. Also, it was kind of expected that her mother would rat her out for all of the crimes she committed. However, it was quite the surprise to see “hero” Jack roll into the courtroom as Kate’s character witness.

“I’m sick of lying!”, Jack proclaimed at the end of last season to Kate. Obviously, he was not sick of it while under oath in court. There were eight survivors of the plane crash? So what happened to the other 40 people Jack? Of those eight, only six survived to see civilization again. Why are they lying about what happened? Are they being threatened? Are the people left behind on the Island being threatened? Did the Oceanic 6 sell out their fellow 815ers in order for rescue? I think that is the really question. When you think about Hurley’s guilt and that being his desire to go back, it leads me to believe that Jack, Kate, Sayid, Hurley, and whomever the other two (or one?) 6ers are made a decision that put everyone else in danger and they have been forced to lie about it.

When Jack met Kate after her trial ended, she didn’t seem against the idea of having Jack in her life. There was one prerequisite: Jack had to see “her son”. Jack seemed about as keen on that as contracting an STD. Why? Forget the “it’s Jack’s nephew” angle. Forget the “Jack thinks the baby is Sawyer’s angle”. Jack can’t look at that kid because of the guilt that is eating away at him, slowly but surely. Jack feels that way because Aaron’s real mother, Claire, is dead. Claire is dead, or at the very least abandoned on the Island, and Jack cannot handle seeing a reminder of the lie that he and the rest of the 6 are forced to tell.

This episode was good but it was another building block that is pushing us towards some very inevitable conclusions. There weren’t as many answers revealed as questions that we know will be answered and I believe quite quickly. It’s hard to say it was the weakest of the four episodes this season so far. It may be. It probably isn’t. I guess what I’m saying is that “Lost” has really done the impossible. “Lost” has found a way to be just as revolutionary as it was from Episode 1.1.

One Response to “Episode 4.4: “Eggtown””

  1. Ahlia Says:

What no theories on why this episode is called “Eggtown”? Apparently the chickens have no fertility issues. I am continually amazed @ how good this show is at getting you to really care about so many characters in so little screen time. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite & I am hoping we have not seen the last of Sayid & Desmond (very strong in their roles). I constantly ask myself why I continue to watch a show that has such a sense of final foreboding. I hate unhappy endings that feel like they are done just to go against the grain. I am hoping that we will be left w/some ambiguity regarding the people who are left on the island. I’m with Sawyer, why not stay there and make a new life? Who hasn’t dreamed of starting over on a tropical island?
