Episode 4.5: “The Constant”
Where to begin? This episode of “Lost” was jaw-dropping. The amount of information given to us was phenomenal. There are now numerous theories that we can pretty much put to bed. I normally don’t write my “Lost” stuff this way but this episode pretty much requires it.
Roads? Where we’re going…we don’t need roads.
Desmond had himself a different trip through time this time around. The last time my favorite Scotsman went back in time, it was due to the hatch implosion. The difference then was that Desmond knew he was back in time and had serious thoughts about changing his future. He did not and we all know he crashed on the Island, yada yada yada.
This time, Desmond was leaving the Island. Once the helicopter (piloted by Frank) veered off Daniel’s course, Des flew back to 1996 and found himself doing push-ups in the mud. This time, the process was reversed. Desmond truly believed he was in 1996 and was having some wild-ass dreams about 2004. He didn’t know what he was doing on the helicopter, who Sayid was, and most of all, he knew nothing about the Island.
Eventually, Desmond meets the famous but unseen Minkowski. Apparently, Minkowski is having some time difficulties as well. Desmond and Minkowski bond, share a coffee, and learn about their shared sticking in time. Eventually, Desmond gets on the horn with Daniel who gives him instructions to go find him at Oxford. Pretty convenient and all but, who cares? We’re already dealing with some insane stuff so my reality is already checked at the door.
See, Daniel knows that Desmond has met him. He knows that Desmond needs to tell him some math stuff. He knows that Desmond needs to find his constant. Of course, in true “Lost” fashion, Desmond’s constant is the one and only Penny Widmore. Daniel explains that the constant must be something that will bring your past consciousness up to speed with your present. That is what I really made of it.
Desmond seeks out Penny and can’t find her. He tracks down Mr. Widmore (WAY more on him later) and gets Penny’s address. He goes to see her and their conversation rips our hearts out. He explains that he will call her on December 24th, 2004 and he needs her number. It was truly painful to hear Desmond tell her that she will not hear from him for eight years. Emotional stuff…and yes I cried.
The crying didn’t stop when Desmond did call Penny. Their conversation was so emotional. Penny told him that she knew about the Island. She told him about her conversation with Charlie…which really brought out the waterworks in the Cinematically Correct household. It was a beautiful moment. At this point, Desmond and Penny have to be reunited. It will be gut-wrenching if that does not happen.
Whole lotta Hanso
So Charles Widmore bought a book huh? Oh it’s an artifact found from a slave ship called the “Black Rock”? You don’t say? So that slave ship was captained by some Magnus Hanso guy? No way really?
Oh my goodness. That was a moment that “Lost” fans have been waiting for quite some time. Now, without a shadow of a doubt, we know that Charles Widmore, Penny’s dear old scumbag dad, is fully aware of the Island, DHARMA, and the Hanso Foundation. There is no question. Widmore was at that auction specifically to buy the journal written by the first mate of the “Black Rock”.
For those that are unaware, the Hanso Foundation is the group that created the DHARMA Initiative. Alvar Hanson is that company’s CEO. He is also the grandson of Magnus Hanso. There is no way for the “Lost” writers to have spelled this out any better. I believe that Widmore is part of a sinister group against the Hanso Foundation and he is well aware of DHARMA and the Island. There is no way that his purchase of Magnus Hanso’s journal was sheer coincidence. Let me stress that point: There is no f’ing way. I believe that Widmore was there on orders to buy that journal. So the question is why did Widmore buy the journal?
Sickees.
So what do you think, the “sickness” that Minkowski talked about…think that is what happened to Danielle’s crew? Perhaps it is what caused one of the first hatch people, Radzinsky, to commit suicide? Is this this “sickness” that we have heard so much about?
I, for one, am certain this is it. For some reason, you can only come to the Island in a certain way and if you don’t, you have this stuck in time issue. That sickness makes you go fairly nutty and causes eventual death (as we saw with Minkowski). I am sure that Danielle’s research team got sick, went nuts, and she was forced to kill them to protect herself. Remember, she really couldn’t explain the “sickness”…and who really could?
That’s about all I have right now. I am sure that plenty of things are going to come to me during the course of the week and I’ll be sure to post them. For now, I am going to give that huge section of my brain filled with “Lost” information a rest. Phew.

I have a theory now that the flashbacks are really them going back and forth. I also think that they’re changing the past and future as a result. AND I think that we’re going to meet Minkowski in the past and thanks to his time hopping, he’s going to know what’s going on.
