NBC Keeps The Chin…I Mean Jay Leno!

My inside source at NBC calls the station “Nothing But Changes” but today’s announcement of keeping Jay Leno on the air disproves that title. I feel that the main reason NBC wanted to keep Leno around is that a) Howie Mandell makes Jay Leno seem like Rodney Dangerfield and b) the network knows they are in for epic failure with Jimmy Kimmel.

All NBC is doing is killing programming time on the cheap. While this makes economic sense, it’s actually all due to poor decisions by the network. They marketed the hell out of “Knight Rider”, “My Own Worst Enemy”, and “Lipstick Jungle” and those shows failed. They are losing “ER” (Thank God) and now, they can fill that 10 PM slot with their old pal Jay. Sure, he’ll command a big salary but that is nothing compared to the cost of producing a series.

NBC Keeps Television Talker As O’Brien Takes Late-Night Slot

Television talker Jay Leno is not only staying at his NBC home — he’s moving to prime time.

The network announced on the “Today” show Tuesday that Leno will host a show weeknights at 10 p.m. Eastern, after he leaves the “Tonight” show.

The network had announced earlier that Conan O’Brien would move to the “Tonight” show and succeed Leno.

The deal prevents Leno from moving to another network and competing with O’Brien, and has the potential to save costs for NBC.

Dramas at 10 p.m. used to be a mainstay of network schedules, but they have been fading — particularly on NBC.

One reason is digital video recorders; more people are watching shows they taped earlier than the live 10 p.m. shows.
