Paul Thomas Anderson & Phillip Seymour Hoffman Agree To Battle Royal With Seann William Scott, Billy Bob Thornton, & James Earl Jones

Ah, when Phillip Seymour Hoffman was only known as the "Creepy Ginger" from "Boogie Nights". Paul Thomas Anderson must have went through what is commonly known as “Phillip Seymour Hoffman Withdrawal Syndrome” while making “There Will Be Blood” because they are now going to make yet another film together. Considering that Hoffman was in every, single Anderson movie up until this point, it was surprising that Hoffman was not in his most critically acclaimed movie.

This new untitled flick is set in 1952 (A period movie by Anderson? No way!) and will focus on an intellectual (Hoffman) that creates his own religion. Let’s see, a quick Wikipedia search…oh, what a coincidence, L. Ron Hubbard created Scientology in 1952. You know, the religion that teaches you about the “Galactic Confederacy” and that alien dude Xenu that brought humans to Earth via spacecraft about 75 million years or so…give or take a few. You would think that with their spacecraft-building technology, they would have kept some sort of written record of that historical event. I guess we just have to take Hubbard’s word for it right?

Cinematically Correct note: Yes, I realize that The Bible cannot be proven to be a 100% historically accurate account. It is however much easier to believe in since it features human beings and not Wookies or Ewoks or Mogwai or whatever.

I’m already wigging out about this movie. Hoffman is one of my favorite actors, and I totally see him as a wandering intellectual who dupes — er, converts — people to his way of thinking.

Me too! Since Anderson took his shots at what is wrong with organized religion in “There Will Be Blood”, I’m guessing he won’t pull any punches when it comes to a cult!
